Make a Launcher to Create Desktop Application Launchers for Oneiric 11.10

In earlier versions of Ubuntu, you could create shortcuts or launchers for your favorite applications and system locations right on the desktop. Unfortunately, in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot you cannot create desktop launchers by right clicking on the desktop.Rightclicking on the desktop in Oneric 11.10 offers no such option.

First you make sure the gnome-panel package is installed on your system. It was on mine since I am running Gnome classic. If it is not on yours use the following command from your terminal.

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends gnome-panel

Next create a folder to hold your newly created launchers. Open the filemanager in your Home directory and select File>Create New Folder. Name your new folder launchers

Open the terminal and run the following command

gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/launchers/ --create-new

In the Name: field enter

CreateLauncher

In the Command: field enter

gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/launchers/ –create-new .

Note the “.” at the end of the command is important, without it your launcher creator will not work.

In the Comment: field enter

Launcher to create launchers

The result should look like this:

If so, click the Close button.

You should now have a launcher to create launchers in your ~/launchers/ folder. You can to drag it to the Unity bar or copy it to the ./local/share/applications if you want to be able to run it from Dash or Cardapio by typing CreateLauncher in the search field. Or, In my case I can just drag it to my AWN dock.

  1. no such directory

    • Actually there’s a step in the process where you create it. The step reads:

Next create a folder to hold your newly created launchers. Open the filemanager in your
Home directory and select File>Create New Folder. Name your new folder launchers

      alternatively you can enter

      mkdir ~/launchers

      from a terminal
